Every spot, coast by coast

The colour says the state, the seven dots say the week. Click a spot for the detail.

Excellent Good Fair Poor

Significant swell and wind — DWD and Météo-France models via Open-Meteo, refreshed every 30 minutes. The biggest waves run well above the figure shown. Visibility is not measured: it is inferred from swell and wind. Always judge it on the spot.

How to read these numbers

Swell

Ground swell, significant height: the average of the highest third of the waves. The biggest ones run well above it.

Period

The time between two crests. Long period = clean, readable swell; short = confused sea.

Chop

The waves raised by the local wind. This is what stirs the bottom and destroys visibility, far more than the swell does.

Current

Beyond 0.8 m/s the drift becomes serious, even on a flat sea.

Tide

Height above chart datum, as in tide tables, matched to SHOM's predictions for the nearest reference port. In the Mediterranean the tide is only a few tens of centimetres: times are indicative.

Visibility

Not measured, anywhere. It is inferred from chop, swell and wind — judge it on the spot.

DWD, Météo-France and Copernicus Marine models via Open-Meteo. Roughly 9 km resolution: two neighbouring locations can share the same value. Refreshed every 30 minutes.
