How to read these numbers

Swell
Ground swell, significant height: the average of the highest third of the waves. The biggest ones run well above it.
Period
The time between two crests. Long period = clean, readable swell; short = confused sea.
Chop
The waves raised by the local wind. This is what stirs the bottom and destroys visibility, far more than the swell does.
Current
Beyond 0.8 m/s the drift becomes serious, even on a flat sea.
Tide
Height above chart datum, as in tide tables, matched to SHOM's predictions for the nearest reference port. In the Mediterranean the tide is only a few tens of centimetres: times are indicative.
Visibility
Not measured, anywhere. It is inferred from chop, swell and wind — judge it on the spot.
