01 What it is for

A spearo's knife is a cutting tool for two moments: a line, net or weed you are caught in, and a fish that has to be killed quickly and cleanly. It is not a weapon and not a pry bar. A small blade that is always where your hand expects it is worth more than a big one in a sheath you have to find.

Ghost nets and lost fishing line are on every Moroccan rock. A diver wrapped in monofilament at 12 m with no knife has a problem that a knife solves in a second.

02 What to look for

What matters:

  • Size: a blade of 8 to 12 cm. Bigger is heavier, catches on things, and is no better at cutting line.
  • Steel: stainless or, better, a steel that holds an edge in salt water; some blades are coated. Cheap stainless rusts at the handle join.
  • Edge: one plain edge and one serrated, or a line-cutting notch. Serrations cut wet rope and net; the plain edge dispatches a fish.
  • Tip: pointed for dispatching, or blunt to avoid holing the suit and yourself. Many rock hunters prefer a point; a blunt tip is safer in the surge.
  • Sheath: a hard sheath with a positive lock that releases with one hand, and a mount that holds the knife where you want it.
  • Position: on the weight belt, on the forearm, or on the calf. The belt is easiest to reach in trouble; the forearm is fastest for a fish; the calf is out of the way and slowest.

A small, cheap, sharp knife on the belt beats a dive-shop dagger on the calf.

03 Fit and sizing

Blade of 8 to 12 cm; handle that fills a gloved hand; sheath positioned where you can reach it with either hand, since the other may be holding a gun or a fish.

04 Care

Rinse, dry, and oil the blade. Sharpen it when it no longer slices a piece of line cleanly. A knife that has rusted at the tang is retired; a rusted blade snaps under load.

Common mistakes

  • 01 Diving without one because you have never needed it. The one time you need it is the one time you cannot go up for it.
  • 02 A big knife on the calf. Heavy, slow to reach, and it catches on the line.
  • 03 A blunt knife. It does not cut monofilament and it makes dispatching a fish cruel and slow.
