Shooting line and bungee

The metre or two of line between the shaft and the gun. It breaks more fish loose than any other part, and it costs almost nothing to get right.

01 What it is for

The shooting line links the shaft to the gun or the reel, wraps along the barrel while loaded, and follows the shaft out on the shot. After the hit it is what holds the fish to you. It takes the shock of a running fish, chafes on rock and on the shaft's notches, and is the part of the gun most often found broken after a lost fish.

A short bungee at the gun end absorbs the shock a hard fish puts on the line, and is the difference between a flopper tearing out and a fish held.

02 What to look for

Line:

  • Nylon monofilament of 1.5 to 2 mm: stiff, cheap, resists abrasion, easy to see and to wrap along the barrel. The standard on rock guns.
  • Dyneema of 1.5 to 2 mm: stronger, thinner, softer; wraps well on reels; wears faster on rock and is harder to see.

Length: about twice the barrel length for a gun with a fixed line, so that the shaft can fly to full range with a loop to spare. Too long tangles; too short stops the shaft in flight.

Swivels and crimps: a swivel at the shaft end stops the line twisting when a fish spins; crimps must be the right size for the line and made with the right tool, or tied with a knot you trust. A line that breaks at the crimp is a crimp badly done.

Bungee: 20 to 40 cm of thick elastic cord between the line and the gun or the reel, sheathed in dyneema so that it cannot over-stretch and snap. It softens the jolt of a big fish and protects the flopper, the line and your wrist. On a reel gun the bungee goes between the reel line and the shooting line.

03 Fit and sizing

Twice the barrel for a fixed line. Thicker line for bigger fish and rougher rock; 1.8 mm mono is the safe middle.

04 Care

Inspect the line at every wrap point and at the shaft end before each session. Replace it at the first sign of fraying, and replace the whole thing each season. It is a few dirhams of line against a fish.

Common mistakes

  • 01 Reusing a line with a nick in it. It parts on the next good fish.
  • 02 A line too long for the gun. It tangles on the bands and stops the shaft.
  • 03 No bungee on a big-fish gun. The flopper tears out on the first run.
