Spearguns and spears Essential
A barrel, a trigger, rubber bands and a shaft. The simplest reliable tool for the job, and the one to learn on. Length is the only real decision.

Its job is a clean, accurate shot at short to medium range. Everything about choosing one comes back to that: a gun that is too long for the water is slow to aim in rock and surge, and a gun that is too short for the water will not reach a fish that stays at the edge of visibility.
Length first, and length means the barrel, measured in centimetres. Match it to where you dive:
Then the rest:
A gun is a system: barrel, shaft, bands and line have to match. Buying a bare barrel and mixing parts is for later.
Length is the fit. Stand it against your body: a first gun for Moroccan rock is around 80 to 90 cm. Grip size varies by handle; a hand in a 3 mm glove should close round it easily.
Rinse the whole gun in fresh water after every dive, trigger mechanism included, and let it dry in the shade. Salt in the trigger is the usual cause of a misfire. Check the bands for cracks, the wishbone for wear and the line for fraying before every session; replace bands each season whether they look worn or not. Store it unloaded, bands relaxed, out of the sun.
Roller speargun
A band gun with pulleys at the muzzle, so the band pulls the shaft along the whole barrel. More power from a shorter gun, and less recoil, for a diver who already shoots well.
Pneumatic speargun
Compressed air instead of rubber. Compact, powerful for its length, and the traditional gun of the Mediterranean hole hunter.
Shafts and tips
The part that actually holds the fish. Diameter, tip and the notches that catch the band decide whether a hit is a fish or a scar.
Bands and wishbones
The rubber that powers the gun and the wishbone that catches the shaft. Consumables, replaced every season, and the easiest upgrade there is.
