Mask and snorkel Essential

Snorkel

A simple tube, and it should stay one. The features that sell snorkels are the features that ruin them for spearfishing.

Price in Morocco

Prices read on 17 October 2026 from Moroccan online shops. Brands named are examples seen for sale, not a recommendation, and prices change: check before you buy. For second-hand, also look on Avito and in spearfishing groups.

01 What it is for

A snorkel lets you breathe at the surface with your face in the water, so that you can watch the bottom between dives, recover after one without lifting your head, and swim from spot to spot without losing sight of what is below.

In spearfishing it is also the thing you spit out on every descent. That is the whole design brief: it has to be comfortable in the mouth for hours, easy to clear with one breath, and easy to let go of and find again.

02 What to look for

The right snorkel is a plain J-shaped tube with a soft mouthpiece and nothing else. Every addition made for holiday snorkelling works against a spearo:

  • No purge valve. It is one more thing to leak, and it gurgles.
  • No dry-top or splash guard. A valve on top traps air at the surface, whistles, and makes the tube stiff and heavy at the end where you want it light.
  • No corrugated flex section. It holds water, rattles, and drags.

What matters:

  • A soft, comfortable mouthpiece. You will hold it for hours; a hard one gives you jaw ache by the second dive.
  • A tube of moderate diameter. Too narrow and breathing is laboured after a dive; too wide and clearing takes a big breath.
  • A simple keeper that lets the snorkel swing free. Most spearos let it hang from the mask strap or tuck it under the hood rather than clipping it rigidly.
  • A colour you can find at the surface if it comes loose, and a shape that does not catch the shooting line.

A rigid snorkel is preferred by most experienced divers because it stays put and does not bounce. A very flexible one folds in the surf.

03 Fit and sizing

One size. The only adjustment is the mouthpiece: if the stock one is too big for your mouth, some snorkels take a smaller replacement. Position the keeper so the tube sits behind your ear and the top is clear of the water when you are looking down at the surface.

04 Care

Rinse it. Replace the mouthpiece when it tears at the bite tabs, which it will after a season or two. A snorkel that has been left in a hot car will kink and never straighten.

Common mistakes

  • 01 Buying a dry-top snorkel. It floats the tube, whistles in the swell, and makes descents noisy.
  • 02 Clipping the snorkel rigidly to the mask. When you spit it out on a descent it should swing free, not lever the mask off your face.
  • 03 Keeping it in your mouth on the way down. It fills, it drags, and it is the first thing a fish notices moving.
