Float, line and flag Essential
The buoy at the surface that says a diver is below. It carries the flag, the fish, the spare shaft and, when it matters, you.

All gear prices in Morocco →A float does four things. It carries the flag that tells boats there is a diver under it, which is the only thing between you and a propeller on a Moroccan point on a Sunday. It holds the fish away from your body, where a bleeding sar attracts nothing worse than a curious wrasse. It carries the spare shaft, the water bottle and the knife you do not want on your belt. And it is something to hold on to when you are tired, cramped or a long way from the rock.
Diving without a float is diving invisible. Most of the coast's boat traffic, from fishing skiffs to jet skis, does not expect a head at the surface and will not see one.
Two families:
What matters on either:
A wide board with a flag and a pouch, a "planche", is popular on the Mediterranean side for its stability and the gear it carries; a slim torpedo tows more easily against current.
10 to 15 litres of buoyancy for shore diving. Bigger in open water, smaller only if you are swimming a long way through surf to reach the rock.
Rinse, let it dry deflated, check the valve and the seams, and patch a puncture the day you find it. UV kills PVC in a couple of seasons if it is left in the sun; store it in the shade.
Float line
The line from the float to the gun. It gives a running fish something to fight other than you, and it is how you find a dropped gun.
Dive flag
The Alpha flag, blue and white, on a mast above the float. It is the one signal a boat is trained to recognise.
