Accessories Worth having
A thick patch on the chest to brace the gun against when you load it. Your sternum will thank you by the tenth load.
Loading a band gun means putting the butt of the gun against your chest and pulling the band back with both hands. A single 16 mm band takes 25 to 30 kg of pull; two bands on a long gun, twice that. Without a pad the butt bruises the sternum in a session and the diver starts loading badly, off-centre and in a hurry, which is how bands slip and guns go off.
A pad spreads the load, gives the butt a non-slip surface to sit on, and makes loading a calm, repeatable movement.
Two kinds:
What matters:
About 15 by 20 cm, centred on the sternum. A separate pad on straps is adjusted so that it cannot slide down.
Rinse with the suit. A separate pad is dried out of the sun; its straps go the way of all rubber.
Fish stringer
A needle and a cord to carry the catch. It hangs from the float, not from you.
Gear bag
Long enough for the fins, tough enough for the rock, and it drains. The bag decides whether your gear lasts.
Anti-fog
A drop on the lens before the dive. Spit works, the bottle works better, and neither works until the new-mask film is burnt off.
